The Red Eight Gallery in London is currently hosting an innovative exhibition that pays tribute to the greatest Shakespearean actors of our time. Titled “The Shakespeare Portraits (Act I),” this show features ten digital portraits of contemporary actors, including well-known figures like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. What sets these portraits apart is their lifelike quality – they can blink, breathe, and even recite lines from various Shakespeare plays.

Created by StageBlock, a tech studio specializing in interactive art, these portraits offer a unique and intimate experience for viewers. Critics have praised the realism and attention to detail in the portraits, with Michael Billington from the Guardian noting the subtle movements and expressions of the subjects. Each actor brings their own interpretation to the Shakespearean text they recite, giving audiences a closer look at how they approach the Bard’s work.

Visitors to the exhibition can interact with the portraits by pressing a button to hear the actors deliver their speeches. From Ian McKellen’s rendition of “all the world’s a stage” to Harriet Walter’s take on “Ye elves of hill,” each performance showcases the actor’s talent and connection to the material. The goal of StageBlock is not only to showcase the novelty of these digital portraits but also to establish them as lasting works of art that can be displayed and sold in galleries.

Looking ahead, StageBlock plans to continue the series with an “Act II” featuring a new lineup of Shakespearean actors. The company hopes to expand the collection with additional iconic figures in the future, creating a lasting tribute to the talent and artistry of these performers. “The Shakespeare Portraits (Act I)” will be on display at the Red Eight Gallery in London until January 10, 2025.
