How has Elon Musk’s influence altered the perception of Tesla?
The transformation of the Tesla brand into a political symbol is exemplified by Senator Mark Kelly’s recent decision to part ways with his vehicle. In a video message, he elucidated his reasoning.
Kelly stated:
Mark Kelly here in Washington, driving to work for the last time in my Tesla. When I bought this vehicle, I never anticipated that it would become embroiled in political controversy. In the past couple of months, every time I step into this car, I’m reminded of the detrimental impact that Elon Musk and Donald Trump are having on our nation.
They’re proposing cuts to Social Security and healthcare for the most vulnerable, including seniors. It’s one troubling issue after another, even firing veterans. As a veteran myself, it’s difficult for me to continue driving this car. So today, I’m making the choice to upgrade. This is officially my last ride in this vehicle.
While I appreciated certain aspects of the car, there were also drawbacks. But that’s irrelevant now. What truly matters is making the right choice. I believe it’s time to say goodbye. Elon Musk has revealed himself to be rather unsavory, and I no longer wish to drive a car produced by someone I consider an ‘asshole.’
I’m looking forward to my new ride.

Senator Kelly’s remarks highlight a significant point: ownership of a Tesla has now become a political statement. For many who oppose the firing of disabled veterans and the cutting of Social Security, driving a Tesla conflicts with their personal values.
Cars, ideally, should not embody political ideologies, yet Elon Musk has effectively turned Tesla into a political emblem.
In contrast to some of his counterparts, Kelly did not theatrically destroy his Tesla, as one might expect in a media frenzy. Instead, he made a thoughtful personal choice, and given Tesla’s declining sales and stock performance, it seems he is not alone in his sentiments.
