MARGARET BRENNAN: Federal authorities have escalated their presence by deploying agents from various divisions, with the FBI announcing their involvement yesterday.
The scenes emerging from Chicago are quite dramatic, particularly surrounding the protests that have erupted over immigration policies. Footage currently airing illustrates the tension-filled encounters on the streets of the city.
Reports have emerged that an ICE officer shot a woman in Brighton Park just yesterday.
According to Secretary Noem, ICE fired shots in self-defense against a woman they claim was armed and had been flagged in a border patrol intelligence alert. She alleges that federal officers found themselves encircled and felt threatened. What insights are local officials sharing regarding this incident?
DUCKWORTH: The reality is remarkable—this administration is awash in untruths. We have a president notorious for his falsehoods, and the narrative surrounding these events has been consistently distorted.
There was even a case where officers resorted to deploying tear gas canisters towards a journalist merely passing by with her window down.
We are reminding our demonstrators to stay calm and to conduct their protests peacefully, firmly exercising their First Amendment rights. However, we also encourage everyone to document the events as they unfold. With phones at everyone’s disposal, capturing evidence has never been more accessible. We need to ensure clarity and accountability because we are aware of the administration’s propensity for bending the truth.
What I’m observing is that the majority of protestors are maintaining a respectful demeanor, yet ICE’s approach is alarmingly forceful. Let’s not forget that they are forcibly restraining children.
They have been conducting midnight raids in residential buildings, ripping families apart and even dragging individuals into the streets inappropriately attired.
This resembles Gestapo-style tactics in Chicago, which seems to be precisely the kind of intimidation that Trump aims to instill. But that won’t deter us—recording these events is critical, and we will ensure that, akin to the ruling made in Portland, we challenge the legitimacy of the Trump administration’s directives.
In a previous statement, Duckworth accused Trump of mobilizing National Guard units to urban areas with the ulterior motive of influencing future elections.
“This President is orchestrating conditions to enable unilateral control over the streets of our cities, interfering with the next election and executing his agenda,” she stated at that time.
