Senate Democrats seem to have finally tuned into the public sentiment.
In an unusual display of restraint, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remained largely silent while his party wrestled with the implications of a Continuing Resolution (CR) passed by House Republicans that many deemed inadequate.
However, Schumer eventually offered his thoughts late Wednesday, announcing a strategy that involved a filibuster against the contentious bill.
On the Senate floor, Schumer proclaimed:
Funding the government ought to be a collaborative effort.
However, Republicans have chosen a partisan route, crafting their Continuing Resolution without soliciting input from Congressional Democrats.
As a result, Republicans lack the necessary votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House’s CR.
Our caucus is united behind a clean CR that maintains government operations until April 11th, allowing Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that is viable. We should put that to a vote.
I encourage our Republican colleagues to join us in order to avert a shutdown by Friday.
The crux of the Senate Democrats’ approach lies in a glaring logistical flaw: the House has already adjourned for the week, which means that even if Senate Republicans were willing to support a one-month CR, the House would be unable to pass it before funding runs dry this Friday.
In a dramatic turn, Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared to have miscalculated, believing they could pressure Senate Democrats into acquiescing to their demands by forcing a last-minute showdown. The expectation was that Democrats would be cornered with no viable alternative.
Yet, contrary to their assumptions, Senate Democrats stood firm. Throughout the week, there were murmurs of concern that several Democrats might cave under pressure, fearing the blame for a government shutdown. However, the party’s grassroots members made it abundantly clear that they would not assist Trump in his efforts to dismantle federal programs.
Unless a miraculous resolution emerges in the next 48 hours, Trump’s gambit seems poised to backfire, potentially leading to a government shutdown.
Senate Democrats have heeded the voice of the American public, displaying resilience against Trump’s tactics. This moment serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained public pressure, which has evidently influenced the Democrats’ decision-making process.
