Apple TV+ Series “The Studio” Premieres at SXSW

It’s fitting that creative partners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg chose to premiere their Apple TV+ series “The Studio” — a scathingly accurate satire of the modern film industry — at South by Southwest, a festival at once adoring of film culture and deeply irreverent about Hollywood. Rogen plays Matt Remick, who is suddenly promoted into the job running the fictional Continental Studios. Veteran actors and fellow SXSW attendees Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz, and Chase Sui Wonders play members of Matt’s team, while the show also boasts a cavalcade of top stars playing (versions of) themselves. The first episode alone features Paul Dano, Peter Berg, Nicholas Stoller, Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, and Steve Buscemi, most of whom are wrapped up in Matt’s frantic quest to lock down a director for his first major project: a feature film adaptation of Kool-Aid.

At the Q&A following the premiere, Rogen humorously addressed the challenges of making good films in Hollywood. He emphasized the difficulty in the process and aimed to showcase the behind-the-scenes chaos that goes into creating a successful movie. The show’s creators aimed to populate their film with as many top-tier names as possible to paint an accurate picture of a Hollywood movie studio. They reached out to friends and actors they admired, including Martin Scorsese, who Rogen had never met before but was thrilled to have on board. The series promises a hilarious and insightful look at the inner workings of the film industry.

One of the most striking aspects of the show is its unique cinematography. Every scene in the series unfolds in a single shot, creating an immersive and panic-inducing experience for both the characters and the audience. Episode 2, “The Oner,” focuses on director Sarah Polley trying to shoot a pivotal scene in one take, showcasing the challenges and creativity involved in filmmaking. Rogen and Goldberg’s decision to use this filming technique adds a layer of authenticity to the show and sets it apart from traditional TV series.

“The Studio” is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on March 26, offering viewers a humorous and insightful look at the inner workings of the film industry. With a star-studded cast and a fresh approach to storytelling, this series is sure to entertain and enlighten audiences about the complexities of Hollywood. Make sure to tune in for a wild ride through the world of filmmaking with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg at the helm.
