A wind watch has been issued for the upper South Island tonight, with Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, Buller, Grey, and Westland north of Harihari expected to experience strong winds. The watch, starting at 10pm, will last until 2pm tomorrow. Southeast winds may reach severe gales in exposed areas, with a possibility of upgrading to a warning.

On the other hand, the North Island is facing heavy rain and strong winds. Gisborne/Tairāwhiti, Coromandel, and Hawke’s Bay are under a heavy rain warning, affecting attendees of the Rhythm and Vines festival. Auckland, Great Barrier Island, and Coromandel are under a strong wind watch, while the central North Island will be added to the watch at 10am. Severe gales warning has been issued for Manawatu, Horowhenua, and Kapiti coast from 4pm, with Tararua district and Wairarapa under a heavy rain watch from 6pm.

For those looking for the best weather in the North Island today, Northland and Whanganui are the recommended destinations.
