Registered Sex Offender Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault in Humboldt Park
A 40-year-old registered sex offender, Arthur White, is facing charges for allegedly dragging a woman into a Humboldt Park alley and sexually assaulting her while she begged for her life. Prosecutors revealed that White denied responsibility for the attack until Chicago police showed him surveillance video of the entire incident.
White appeared in court and was ordered detained by Judge Ankur Srivastava after prosecutors detailed the January 12 assault and his subsequent arrest in a separate incident less than a mile away.
According to prosecutors, the 29-year-old victim had just taken the North Avenue bus home from work when White approached her and offered assistance. When she declined, White allegedly grabbed her, pulled her into an alley behind the 1400 block of North Lawndale Avenue, and sexually assaulted her while she screamed for help.
During the assault, White allegedly covered the victim’s mouth with a gloved hand to muffle her screams, nearly causing her to lose consciousness. He then fled the scene, leaving the victim traumatized and in need of medical attention.
The victim reported the assault to the police, who took her to Mt. Sinai Hospital for treatment and evidence collection. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the entire attack, corroborating the victim’s account.
Investigating officers discovered a similar incident involving White at a Subway restaurant, where he allegedly groped a young woman before being apprehended by police. The victim of the alley assault positively identified White from a photo lineup, leading to his arrest.
Despite initially denying the assault, White was confronted with the surveillance video by detectives, prompting him to cover his head with his jacket in shame. Prosecutors revealed that White has a history of felony convictions, including sexual assault of a minor, narcotics offenses, and possession of a firearm as a felon.
White faces charges of sexual assault, battery, and failure to register as a sex offender. His criminal record underscores the importance of monitoring and enforcing sex offender registration laws to protect the community from repeat offenders like White.
