Cranbrook Academy of Art is more than just a graduate school; it is a vibrant community of architects, artists, and designers pushing the boundaries of visual and material culture. For decades, it has been celebrated as the “birthplace of mid-century modernism” and continues to be a hub of innovation, producing graduates whose contributions far exceed the Academy’s modest size.

Originating as a visionary artists’ colony in Michigan, Cranbrook remains committed to its foundational ethos. Rather than following traditional classroom formats and strict syllabi, students engage in intensive mentorship from faculty and Artists-in-Residence—distinguished professionals who are actively shaping their disciplines. This unique approach allows students to explore their personal inquiries, creative experiments, and professional goals within a supportive and collaborative environment.

Ranked among the premier graduate programs across the United States in art, architecture, and design, Cranbrook equips students to confidently transition into their fields. Our community comprises about 150 graduate students from ten disciplines: Architecture, Ceramics, Fiber, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Print Media, and Sculpture.

Accessibility stands at the forefront of our mission. This academic year, 97% of Cranbrook students received some form of gift funding. We award up to 10 full-tuition Gilbert Fellowships annually to students from diverse backgrounds, in addition to more than 50 merit scholarships. Beyond our campus, we support students in securing residencies, fellowships, and opportunities at leading design firms.
