Kemp, who was initially charged with assault in the first degree, was accused of firing a gun during a dispute in a Tacoma shopping mall parking lot in March 2023.
Despite pleading not guilty and claiming self-defense, Kemp decided to plead guilty to the lesser charge of assault in the second degree. He is scheduled for sentencing on August 22.
The sentencing recommendation is open, allowing both sides to present their recommendations to the judge. It remains uncertain how much jail time, if any, Kemp might face.
Kemp, a six-time All-Star, had a successful NBA career from 1989 to 2003, primarily known for his time with the Seattle Supersonics.
