Rocío Gallardo, the creative director of the Valencia-based handcrafted jewelry studio Simuero, recently decided to expand their collection by turning their bestselling rings—the Faro, Buzo, and Duna—into toe rings. Inspired by the success of their Arena toe ring, Gallardo and co-founder Jorge experimented with adding colorful birthstones to the new designs. Describing the process as a game and very instinctive, Gallardo shared that she enjoys the freedom of designing without the pressure of following trends.
In a conversation with Gallardo, she mentioned that she always wears toe rings, even with closed shoes, as they hold sentimental value to her. One of her toe rings is even her engagement ring, which she designed and wears proudly. She emphasized that her job allows her to design based on her intuition rather than following trends, which gives her a sense of creative freedom.
On the other hand, Tessa Tran, the CEO and creative director of Chan Luu, a jewelry label founded by her aunt in 1983, drew inspiration from her frequent trips to India for their toe ring collection. Celebrating their latest launch with a ‘pedi party’ at a New York nail salon, Chan Luu showcased chunkier styles like the Caprice rings, which can be stacked on toes for a bold statement. Tran noted that toes are currently having a moment in the fashion world, with a trend towards playful and bold accessories.
Tran shared her admiration for how jewelry is worn in India, where every piece carries meaning beyond just its aesthetic value. Traditionally, toe rings in India symbolize marital status and are believed to have Ayurvedic health benefits. Tran drew inspiration from the layers of jewelry worn by Indian women, such as stacks of anklets and multiple rings on a single toe, which influenced Chan Luu’s latest toe ring collection.
Overall, both Gallardo and Tran agree that toe rings are a fun and expressive way to add a unique touch to an outfit. As fashion trends shift towards bold and playful accessories, toe rings offer an easy way to transform a look. Whether stacked on multiple toes or paired with elegant footwear, toe rings are making a comeback in the world of jewelry fashion.
