The Musée du Louvre jewel heist, which took place three months ago, has captivated the world with its audacity and brazenness. Recently, CCTV footage from inside the museum on the day of the robbery was released to the public on the investigative TV program “Complément d’Enquête” on France TV. The footage, lasting three minutes, shows two thieves effortlessly navigating the museum’s Apollo Gallery and stealing the nation’s crown jewels.
The video begins with a group of security guards gathered near the entrance of the gallery, hesitating before quickly dispersing as the first thief breaks in through a window using a portable circular saw. Dressed in all black and wearing a hi-vis construction vest, he heads straight for the central display cases holding the precious jewels, with his accomplice close behind. As the thieves begin sawing through the cases, security guards can be seen attempting to intervene, only to retreat and leave the room.
With determination and precision, the thieves shatter the protective glass, grab the jewels, and hastily stash them in their pockets before making their escape through the window. They descend to the ground level using a stolen basket crane, disappearing into the night. Despite several arrests made in connection with the heist, the stolen jewels have yet to be recovered.
The Louvre’s security system has come under scrutiny for its inadequacy, and security staff have faced criticism for their apparent inaction during the robbery. However, the museum has clarified that their primary focus is on visitor safety and that staff are not expected to confront thieves or attackers. The release of the CCTV footage coincides with ongoing union strikes at the Louvre, with workers demanding better pay and increased staffing.
The daring jewel heist at the Musée du Louvre has highlighted vulnerabilities in museum security and sparked conversations about the role of security staff in such incidents. As the investigation into the robbery continues, the public remains intrigued by the audacity of the thieves and the intricate planning that went into the brazen crime.
