A person of interest has been taken into custody after being seen running through a Chicago Police Department station parking lot shortly after a man was shot just a half-block away. The incident took place at 11:27 p.m. on Thursday in the 500 block of West Hobbie Street, near the Near North (18th) District station parking lot at 1160 North Larrabee Street.

According to the CPD, an 18-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk with a group of friends when an unknown assailant opened fire, hitting him in the back and arm. The shooter fled the scene, prompting officers outside the police station to detain a man running through the parking lot right after the shots were fired. Detectives are currently investigating to determine if he was involved in the shooting.

Upon inspection of the shooting scene, police discovered several shell casings, a backpack containing suspected narcotics, and another firearm. Additionally, another firearm was found in the 1100 block of North Larrabee Street, directly across from the CPD lot. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and reported to be in good condition.

This incident marks the 12th shooting on the Near North Side this year, an increase from 11 at this same point last year. Comparatively, in 2023 there were 10 shootings, in 2022 there were 33, in 2021 there were 15, in 2020 there were 8, and in 2019 there were 15. It is important to note that the tally includes accidental self-inflicted gunshot injuries, shootings by police, and shootings carried out in self-defense, with each category accounting for one or fewer incidents in each total provided above.

CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the inaccurate information presented at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Since then, the coverage area has expanded to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side areas. The mission of CWBChicago remains the same: to provide original public safety reporting with better context and more detail than mainstream media outlets.
