Attempted Murder Charges Filed Against 19-Year-Old Man for Shooting Incident at Bronzeville Jewel-Osco

A shocking incident occurred at a Jewel-Osco store in Bronzeville last year, resulting in a 19-year-old man being charged with attempted murder. Elijah Theodore is accused of shooting a security guard and two other individuals while allegedly trying to steal flowers and a greeting card from the store.

The incident took place on November 11 at the store located at 443 East 34th Street. Prosecutors claim that Theodore, accompanied by an accomplice, entered the store around 10:45 a.m. and attempted to leave without paying for several flower bouquets and a card. When a 46-year-old security guard, who reportedly knew Theodore by name, tried to intervene, Theodore allegedly became violent, pushing the guard multiple times before pulling out a gun and opening fire.

As a result of the shooting, the security guard and two store employees were injured. Responding officers quickly administered aid to the guard, applying tourniquets to control the bleeding before he was transported to a hospital in serious condition. Another employee, a 39-year-old female, sustained a gunshot wound to the foot and was taken to a hospital in good condition. Additionally, a 67-year-old female customer suffered a graze wound but declined medical treatment.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as customers and employees sought refuge, with some hiding in back rooms and a walk-in freezer. Two individuals also suffered minor injuries from falls during the commotion.

Following the incident, Theodore and his accomplice fled the scene, but Theodore was later apprehended in Maricopa County, Arizona, and extradited to Chicago to face charges. During a detention hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava ordered Theodore to be held without bail until his trial, condemning the crime as “brazen, violent, and senseless.” It was revealed that at the time of the shooting, Theodore had an active warrant for failing to appear in court for a misdemeanor charge of resisting police.
