A man suspected of shoplifting at a Home Depot store in Lakewood was shot by police on Friday afternoon after he allegedly threatened officers who confronted him, according to officials.

Lakewood Police Department officers were called to the store at 7200 W. Colfax Ave. at 2:35 p.m. after employees reported a man who had been caught shoplifting and had threatened them, said police spokesperson John Romero.

The man had crossed the street and was located north of Colfax when officers found him, Romero explained. He allegedly used a stolen item as a weapon and threatened the officers, resulting in one officer firing a single shot at the man.

Police immediately provided medical assistance to the man before transporting him to the hospital, Romero added. There was no immediate update on his condition.

No officers were harmed during the incident.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, eastbound lanes of West Colfax between Zephyr Street and Wadsworth are currently closed and are expected to remain closed for several hours, as per police officials.

This story is still developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
