Team India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has provided an update on Shubman Gill’s injury as the hosts gear up to level the series in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. Kotak mentioned that Gill is on track to play as he is recovering well from his neck injury.
During the first Test at Eden Gardens, Gill sustained a neck injury after facing only three balls in the first innings. He was subsequently taken to a private hospital and did not participate in the second innings as India fell short by 30 runs in pursuit of 124. The 26-year-old cricketer was discharged after the end of Day 3’s play.
In a press conference on Thursday, Kotak highlighted the impact of Gill’s absence during the run-chase on a challenging pitch. He emphasized the importance of Gill’s potential return, stating, “Even if he is recovered, he shouldn’t get the spasm again during play. That is important. Last game nobody discussed this — if Shubman could have batted both innings, the 30 runs may not have mattered.”
If Gill is unable to recover in time for the upcoming game, Rishabh Pant will lead the Indian team in his absence.
Kotak acknowledged that Gill’s absence as both a player and captain would be a significant setback for the team. However, he expressed confidence in the replacements available, stating, “Any team would miss a player like Shubman and a captain, but we have good replacements — maybe the guy coming in will score a hundred.”
Since taking over as Test captain, Gill has led India to victory against the West Indies at home and a drawn series in England.
In conclusion, the Indian team is hopeful for Shubman Gill’s swift recovery ahead of the crucial second Test against South Africa. The team management will closely monitor his progress and make a decision on his availability closer to the match. With a strong pool of replacements, India remains optimistic about their chances even in Gill’s potential absence.
