A California court has sentenced a kidnapper, Ian Edard Kroe, to nearly four centuries in prison for holding an elderly woman hostage in a motel for two years. Kroe, 58, subjected his now-74-year-old victim to a nightmare of repeated rape and threats of torture if she tried to escape the Hyatt House Belmont Hotel where he kept her captive.

The horrific ordeal began in 2016 when Kroe, originally from Minnesota, struck up a friendship with the victim, who was a family friend offering condolences after the death of his mother. However, the relationship soon turned controlling, with Kroe raping the woman, draining her bank accounts, and imprisoning her in the hotel for two years.

San Mateo District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe described Kroe’s transformation from friend to beast as shocking. Kroe was convicted of 33 felony counts and received a record-long sentence of 394 years to life, a punishment unprecedented in the county’s history.

Starting in August 2020, Kroe held his victim captive, subjecting her to repeated rape and forcing her to perform sexual acts. He threatened to kill her and torture her for weeks if she tried to escape. In 2021, when the woman broke her ankle, Kroe callously refused to get her medical treatment, leaving her in excruciating pain.

The victim managed to contact a friend in New Mexico in August 2022, who alerted the authorities. Belmont police found her naked, covered in bruises, with a broken finger, and unable to move on her own. Kroe faced multiple charges, including torture, forcible sodomy, felony threats, and false imprisonment. Despite claiming that the acts were consensual and alleging that the victim controlled him through witchcraft, Kroe was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison.

A restitution hearing to determine the amount Kroe owes his victim is scheduled for October 29. The case serves as a stark reminder of the horrors that can unfold behind closed doors and the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
