Summary created by Smart Answers AI

In summary:

  • According to Tech Advisor, Silo Season 3 will draw from the novel ‘Shift’, delving into the underground bunker’s history 300 years before the apocalypse through flashbacks.
  • Rebecca Ferguson reprises her role as Juliette with more screen time, while Tim Robbins’ character, Bernard Holland, is confirmed dead and will not return in the new season.
  • The Apple TV+ series will diverge from the original material to keep the focus on main characters and introduce new narratives about the silo’s inception.

The first trailer for Silo’s third season has been released, promising a captivating glimpse into the past.

The initial season of Silo, based on Hugh Howey’s dystopian novels, left audiences with many questions. Fortunately, some mysteries were partially resolved in the second season.

The show revealed what lies behind the mysterious vault doors and highlighted the severe repercussions of rebellion. It also introduced the actual (and unexpected) leader of the silo and offered insights into the distant past.

This doesn’t imply that all enigmas have been solved—Juliette and her companions still have much to uncover regarding the silo’s truth. Their journey will continue in the third season, which Apple TV+ green-lit without delay. Here’s what you need to know.

When will Silo season 3 be released?

Silo is set to return for its third season on Friday, 3 July 2026. The season will comprise ten episodes, released weekly on Apple TV+.

The series was renewed for a third and fourth season on 16 December 2024, following the release of five episodes from season 2.

Spoilers for seasons 1-3 below.

Which book will Silo season 3 be based on?

The first and second seasons of the series adapted stories from Hugh Howey’s novel, Wool. Season 3 will transition to the events in the second book, Shift. However, there’s a twist.

The second novel in the Silo series primarily depicts events occurring over 300 years before Juliette Nichols’ birth, focusing on the origins of silos and their creators. The plot includes a Georgia congressman, Donald Keene, who appeared in the season 2 finale, but is renamed Daniel to avoid current political associations in the US, as per the showrunner.

In the book Shift, Juliette only appears at the very end. However, the series couldn’t follow this storyline. The showrunner explained:

We’ve got Rebecca Ferguson, we can’t do a season of television when she’s [only] in the last scene. We’ve got to come up with something different.

To advance Juliette’s story in season 3, creators might incorporate elements from the third book in the series, Dust. There’s also potential for new plotlines not found in Hugh Howey’s novels.

What will the plot of Silo season 3 be?

Here’s the official synopsis:

Season three of Silo continues the story of a dystopian community of 10,000 living underground under mysterious conditions, unveiling a backstory set centuries earlier. In the present, Juliette Nichols (Ferguson) survives her enforced ‘cleaning’ but returns with memory loss while the silo recovers from rebellion and faces a new threat. Meanwhile, in the ‘Before Times,’ journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) and Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) expose a conspiracy that drags them into a chain of events with dire, irreversible effects.

In the season 2 finale, Juliette finally made it to Silo 18, which had been seized by a rebellion. Knox and Shirley’s team aimed to take control, while the crowd, driven by Patrick Kennedy, sought to kill the IT chief and reach the surface.

Juliette arrived just in time with a handwritten warning not to go outside. As she attempted to re-enter the silo, she encountered Bernard Holland, armed and in a containment suit. Realizing that the rebellion’s success would lead to the silo’s destruction, the IT chief chose to face death on the surface.

Thanks to a discovery in Silo 17, Juliette tried to persuade Bernard of a possible way to halt the poisonous gas and save the community. She entered the airlock, pulling Bernard along, only to be caught in a flame sterilization process – they were last seen in a fire, though Juliette’s suit is known to be fire-resistant.

Simultaneously, Robert Sims, along with his family, reached the secure vault. As a newly appointed IT shadow, he interacted with The Algorithm managing the silos. Despite this, the AI selected Camille Sims as the new leader of the community.

The second season concluded with flashbacks spanning over 300 years. In the US, a young congressman and engineer, Daniel, met with reporter Helen. They talked about a so-called dirty bomb detonated by terrorists and the potential for the US to invade Iran.

At the end of their meeting, Daniel gave Helen a souvenir – a duck-shaped Pez dispenser, which the showrunner confirmed is the same one Juliette possesses years later.

The main characters are expected to uncover more silo mysteries. Viewers might learn solutions before the characters, thanks to Daniel and Helen’s storyline, which aims to unveil the apocalypse’s origins.

Many viewers are eager to revisit Silo 17 in season 3, so Juliette might return to meet Jimmy, aka Solo. The characters could also connect with inhabitants of other silos. According to Jimmy, there are 50 in total, matching the number of US states.

Who will be in the cast of Silo season 3?

The following cast members are expected to return for the third season of Silo:

  • Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette Nichols
  • Chinaza Uche as Paul Billings
  • Common as Robert Sims
  • Alexandria Riley as Camille Sims
  • Avi Nash as Lukas Kyle
  • Harriet Walter as Martha Walker
  • Shane McRae as Knox
  • Remmie Milner as Shirley
  • Clare Perkins as Carla McLain
  • Billy Postlethwaite as Hank
  • Rick Gomez as Patrick Kennedy
  • Steve Zahn as Jimmy Conroy / Solo

Apple has also confirmed that Jessica Henwick and Ashley Zukerman will become series regulars (via Deadline). The pair appeared in the season 2 finale’s surprising flashback, portraying the ambitious reporter Helen and young congressman Daniel.

Iain Glen, who played Juliette’s father, might not return in season 3. Pete Nichols was likely killed by the bomb he detonated on Silo 18’s main stairs. However, he might appear in flashbacks from Juliette’s childhood.

Tim Robbins is expected not to reprise his role as Bernard Holland, as all signs point to the IT chief dying in the airlock. Graham Yost confirmed this to The Wrap:

I will say that in that final confrontation between [Juliette and Bernard], every word is important. There are certain keywords that you’ll see come back big in season 3. I will also say to those who have read the books, Bernard dies at the end of the book, he’s gone. So I would just say that. No one is safe in this show, as we showed in season 1.
