The Silver Ferns made a bold statement by defeating South Africa 77-51 in the opening game of the Taini Jamison series in Auckland. This victory came after coach Noeline Taurua was stood down, proving the team’s resilience. Led by interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie, the Silver Ferns showcased a dominant performance from the start.

Grace Nweke, who had a standout game with 59 goals, demonstrated her growth after playing in Australia. Georgia Heffernan also impressed in her first tests on home soil, creating opportunities for Nweke in the circle.

The Proteas showed glimpses of good play, but the Silver Ferns’ ball speed and defensive pressure made it difficult for them. Despite a better quarter from the Proteas towards the end, the Silver Ferns maintained a strong lead throughout the game.

The intensity of the match decreased in the final quarter as the Silver Ferns secured a comfortable victory. With all 12 players getting game time, including debutant Catherine Hall, the team looks forward to the next game in Napier.
