They will have to reckon with their actions in the afterlife.
A couple exhibiting sinful behavior assaulted and robbed a church worker inside a Manhattan church on Wednesday, after the worker requested they move away from blocking the entrance, according to police and sources.
The sexton, aged 67, of Holy Cross Church confronted a man who seemed to be rolling a joint while seated next to a woman on the church steps near Times Square at approximately 2 p.m., as stated by police and an eyewitness.
The sexton captured a photo of the couple on his cell phone when they refused to move and subsequently went inside to call 911, according to law enforcement.
âIâve got your picture on camera,â the worker reportedly told the couple, as explained by church volunteer Bob Most, 64.
This provoked the unruly couple, leading them to follow him inside the church located on West 42nd Street near Eighth Avenue.
In a violent twist, the man snatched the workerâs phone and struck him in the forehead, resulting in a gash and swelling, before they escaped heading south on Ninth Avenue, according to police.
Most, who was engaged in prayer while the confrontation unfolded, recounted hearing increasing shouts erupting.
<pâLater, I went to the church entrance,â Most recounted. âI saw the worker in the corner, bleeding. He was nearly on the ground and I noticed a man exiting through the doorway.â
<pâHe must have fallen as blood streamed down his forehead. He was holding his head, showing signs of injury,â he continued.

The injured worker informed Most that the thief had taken his phone, prompting Most to chase after the perpetrators.
âHe was heading towards Burger King and I yelled, âIâm filming you!ââ Most recalled. âHe turned around and approached me, but thankfully a good Samaritan intervened, saying, âLeave him alone. Heâs an old man.ââ
The violent individual then engaged in a struggle with the Samaritan while Most continued to follow closely behind.
The sexton was transported to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he received six stitches for the laceration on his forehead, along with a tetanus shot and a CT scan, as stated by Most.
âItâs alarming how his role is increasingly resembling that of a security guard â thatâs becoming part of his responsibilities now,â Most indicated. âI frequently visit and see people urinating and defecating on the church steps. They treat it like a hangout spot where they can behave in any manner.â
Authorities believe both suspects to be in their 20s with dark complexions; the man is described as heavyset, last seen wearing a short-sleeved beige flannel over a black T-shirt paired with blue jeans and gray sneakers.
The woman was seen in a black hoodie, blue jeans, and white sneakers, carrying a black crossbody bag along with a white plastic shopping bag, according to sources.
The victim was taken to Mount Sinai West hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police reported.
