LONDON (AP) — Singer Bonnie Tyler is out of a coma but still “very unwell” in intensive care, according to an update on her official website.

The 75-year-old Grammy-nominated singer, known for her distinct gravelly voice, was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, last month where she resides, to undergo emergency intestinal surgery. Following the procedure, she was placed in an induced coma.

While she is no longer in a coma, “although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time,” the statement posted Monday indicated.

Her scheduled performances through August have been canceled or postponed. However, “we are still hopeful that our shows in the autumn will go ahead,” the statement added.

Tyler is most recognized for the 1980s hit power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” a widely favored karaoke song that sees a resurgence in popularity during solar or lunar eclipses.

Originating from Wales as the daughter of a coal miner, she achieved early success with the 1978 hit “It’s a Heartache.” She later cemented her place in pop history with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” composed by Meat Loaf’s producer and songwriter, Jim Steinman.
