Elton John Reflects on Past Addiction Struggles and Regrets
Elton John has always been candid about his battles with addiction, and as he looks back on his past, he is filled with regret over the impact his hard-partying lifestyle had on his health.
During a past interview, Elton revealed the extent of his destructive habits, saying, “This is how bleak it was: I’d stay up, I’d smoke joints, I’d drink a bottle of Johnnie Walker, and then I’d stay up for three days, and then I’d go to sleep for a day and a half, only to wake up ravenous because I hadn’t eaten anything.”
He continued, “I’d binge on three bacon sandwiches, a pot of ice cream, and then I’d throw it up because I became bulimic, and then I’d repeat the whole cycle all over again.”
Reflecting on his past behavior, Elton admitted, “I’m not being flippant when I say that, when I look back, I shudder at the behavior and what I was doing to myself.” He recalled several instances where he was “very close” to death.
“I mean, I would have an epileptic seizure and turn blue, and people would find me on the floor and put me to bed, only for me to be snorting another line 40 minutes later,” he shared.
Elton’s past struggles with addiction serve as a cautionary tale, highlighting the dangerous consequences of substance abuse. Despite his regrets, Elton has been sober for many years now and has dedicated himself to helping others overcome similar challenges.
Through his music and advocacy work, Elton continues to inspire hope and resilience in those fighting their own battles with addiction. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that it is never too late to seek help and make positive changes for a healthier, brighter future.
