Sir Tim Shadbolt, a beloved man of the people known for his ability to uplift those around him, passed away on January 8 at the age of 78.

Family, friends, and political figures gathered at Invercargill’s Civic Theatre to honor his life, which was marked by social activism, long tenures in council, and even unconventional gestures like towing a concrete mixer behind his mayoral car.

During the service that lasted over three-and-a-half hours, reflections poured in, highlighting Sir Tim’s infectious joy, dedication to service, and unwavering advocacy for Invercargill.

Cousin Tui Shadbolt fondly remembered him as the “ultimate people person” who thrived on engaging in lively debates. She emphasized his ability to inspire and unite people, showcasing leadership qualities that were both impactful and endearing.

Despite the heartfelt tributes, partner Asha Dutt took a moment to express discontent with the city council, citing challenges faced by Sir Tim during his final term in office. Despite these difficulties, Sir Tim’s legacy as a leader who brought joy, creativity, and humanity to his work remained intact.

Rob Shadbolt and Ben Shadbolt, Sir Tim’s sons, shared touching anecdotes about their father’s work ethic, adventurous spirit, and unwavering support.

Renowned Māori activist Tāme Iti paid tribute to Sir Tim’s activism and friendship, acknowledging the significant role he played during protests at Bastion Point.

Sir Tim’s illustrious career, which began with social activism in Auckland, included successful mayoral terms in both Waitematā and Invercargill. Despite facing political challenges, he remained a prominent figure in public life, appearing on various television shows and earning accolades for his contributions to local government and the community.
