While it’s important to approach many TikTok beauty hacks with skepticism, every so often, a method emerges that is genuinely effective. One such technique is known as the skincare sandwiching method.

What is the skincare sandwich method?

The skincare sandwiching method involves layering products based on their texture. It starts with lightweight products—such as toners, mists, or essences—followed by a serum, and topped off with a thicker cream. This technique essentially sandwiches the serum, often rich in active ingredients, between two layers that structure and seal in moisture, much like a “moisture sandwich.” This promotes the effectiveness of ingredients like retinol and vitamin C by trapping them within the skin.

Is skincare sandwiching safe?

“The sandwiching method can yield impressive results; however, selecting appropriate products is crucial for skin safety,” advises Dr. Ev Charlott Walter, a dermatologist based in Berlin.
She emphasizes the importance of understanding that not all textures and ingredients suit every skin type. For instance, retinoids are contraindicated during pregnancy.

Dr. Zein Obagi, a Syrian-American dermatologist and the founder of ZO Skin Health, was an early advocate of this layering technique, curating skincare products designed to create an effective skincare sandwich that nourishes, moisturizes, and shields the skin.

How to create a skincare sandwich

  1. Start by applying your toner, mist, or essence.
  2. Next, introduce your chosen serum—options can include retinol to rejuvenate, vitamin C for hyperpigmentation, or niacinamide to combat impurities.
  3. Finally, seal in your active ingredients using a rich moisturizer.

What are the benefits of a skincare sandwich?

Utilizing the skincare sandwich method can significantly enhance skin hydration and help active ingredients penetrate more deeply. The molecular size of products will ultimately dictate how deeply they can reach within the skin, meaning that consistent application of the sandwich technique can expedite visible improvements. However, it’s important to note that this method won’t yield miraculous results overnight; rather, it serves as a method to optimize the effectiveness of your skincare routine over time.

Who’s the skincare sandwich best suited to?

Generally, anyone can find benefits from this technique, but there are a few caveats. “Individuals with sensitive skin may be at risk of experiencing irritation if they use overly potent or greasy products, which could lead to perioral dermatitis or acne-like circumstances,” warns Walter. “I exercise caution with patients suffering from atopic dermatitis or those with a history of perioral dermatitis,” she continues. Additionally, it’s important to alter your skincare according to seasonal changes—employing richer creams during colder months and lighter hydrating lotions in the summer months is advisable.
