David Croft, also known as Crofty, has recently landed a role in the highly anticipated F1: The Movie, thanks to a recommendation from none other than Lewis Hamilton. The 55-year-old Sky Sports F1 commentator expressed his gratitude to the seven-time champion for endorsing him to the producers of the potential blockbuster.
The production of the F1 movie began in 2023, with the APXGP team present at various race venues over the past couple of years. Hamilton, who was drawn to the idea of the film, wanted to ensure authenticity in the portrayal of the sport.
When it came to selecting voiceovers for the commentary in the movie, Hamilton turned to the voices of F1 internationally, Martin Brundle, and Crofty. At the European premiere of the movie, Crofty revealed how Hamilton’s recommendation played a crucial role in him landing the part:
“If it wasn’t for Lewis [Hamilton], I wouldn’t be in the film. Because he sat down with Jerry Bruckheimer and Joe Kosinski and said, look, if you want to make it authentic in terms of the commentary, don’t get an actor, get Crofty (David Croft) and Martin (Brundle) to do it, because they’re the voice.”
“I’m really glad to say that the producers agree with Lewis on that and I thanked him for it a couple of years ago. He said, you don’t have to thank me. I went, no, no, no, you said a really nice thing, and I really appreciate it.”
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton made the switch to Ferrari over the winter break but has struggled to produce stellar results in the first half of the season. Crofty, in a recent discussion on the Sky F1 show, urged the paddock to offer Hamilton some hope amidst his subpar form with the Italian team:
“I think we were all hoping for more positives, to be honest, especially after China in the sprint when he looked an absolute world-beater once again. Let’s try and offer a bit of hope on this one for him.”
Hamilton currently sits in sixth place in the interim Drivers’ standings after scoring 79 points in the first 10 races of the season. Despite the challenges he has faced with the new team and power units, there is optimism that the seven-time world champion can turn his campaign around in the remaining races of the season.
In conclusion, David Croft’s involvement in F1: The Movie, thanks to Lewis Hamilton’s recommendation, adds an authentic touch to the film. As Hamilton navigates the complexities of his new team at Ferrari, there is hope that he can rediscover his winning form and make a strong comeback in the upcoming races.
