Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner, famous for his historic 2012 skydive from the edge of space, tragically passed away in a paragliding accident in central Italy, according to local authorities. He was 56 years old.

Reports indicate that Baumgartner lost control of his motorized paraglider while flying over Porto Sant’Elpidio in Italy’s Marche region, leading to a fatal fall near a hotel swimming pool. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear.

The mayor of Porto Sant’Elpidio, Massimiliano Ciarpella, mentioned that there were suggestions of a sudden medical problem during the flight, offering condolences on behalf of the town for the loss of a “symbol of courage and passion for extreme sports.”

Baumgartner captured global attention in October 2012 when he leaped from a balloon 24 miles above Earth, breaking the sound barrier and reaching speeds exceeding 833mph over Roswell, New Mexico. This groundbreaking jump coincided with the 65th anniversary of Chuck Yeager’s historic supersonic flight.

Known as the “God of the Skies,” Baumgartner began his skydiving journey as a teenager before transitioning to BASE jumping. His remarkable career included feats like skydiving across the English Channel and parachuting off the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.

Despite his aerial accomplishments, Baumgartner faced controversies, including his support for dictatorship as a form of governance. In a 2010 incident near Salzburg, he was fined 1500 euros for assaulting a Greek truck driver during a traffic dispute.
