Golden Retriever Gilbert Honored Alongside Minnesota Lawmakers
Amidst the tragic shooting of Democratic leader Melissa Hortman and her husband, Gilbert the golden retriever also fell victim to the attack. The beloved dog was by their side during the fatal incident and was later laid in state at the Capitol in St. Paul, becoming the first nonhuman to receive such an honor in Minnesota’s history.
As hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects, Gilbert’s urn was placed next to the Hortmans’ caskets, symbolizing the deep connection between the family and their faithful companion. A memorial outside the House chamber featured a touching tribute with a box of dog biscuits dedicated to the loyal dog.
Following the tragic event, an outpouring of support and tributes flooded in for Gilbert, who had to be euthanized due to the severity of his injuries. The community remembers him as a sweet and gentle soul who brought joy to all who knew him.
Volunteers from Helping Paws Inc., a nonprofit organization that trains service dogs, offered comfort to mourners at the Capitol with their cheerful golden retrievers. Gilbert’s legacy lives on through the love and care he provided to those around him.

Despite his career change from service dog training, Gilbert’s presence left a lasting impact on those who knew him. His story serves as a reminder of the unconditional love and companionship that animals bring into our lives.
As the community mourns the loss of Melissa Hortman, her husband, and Gilbert, their legacy of kindness and compassion continues to inspire those who knew them.
