Monument Honoring Wadee Alfayoumi Unveiled in Plainfield, Illinois

Last month, the community of Plainfield, Illinois came together to unveil a monument in honor of six-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi, who tragically lost his life in a hate crime in 2023. The public artwork, located at a playground now named after Alfayoumi, features his silhouette with his hand raised in a red heart shape.

Designed by visual artist Savera Iftekhar and crafted by Syed “Saif” Rahman of Modern Wall Art, the monument stands on a marble base created by Fahim Rauf from Dream Hauz. The project, costing $10,000, was funded by Cub Scouts Pack 99 of the Midwest Islamic Scouting Council.

“The playground was chosen as the site for the monument because it was a place Wadee loved and frequented,” explained Mohammed Faheem, president of American Muslims Assisting Neighbors.

Tragically, Wadee Alfayoumi’s life was cut short during a time of heightened tensions in Palestine. Just one week into the US-backed assaults on Gaza, the young boy and his mother were attacked by their landlord, Joseph Czuba, resulting in Wadee’s untimely death.

Czuba was recently sentenced to 53 years in prison for the heinous act, which was deemed a hate crime by the court. This incident led to the passing of the Wadee Resolution by the United States Senate, marking a historic recognition of Palestinian Americans.

During the monument’s unveiling ceremony, community members spoke out against Islamophobia, emphasizing the message inscribed on its base: “Hate has no home in Plainfield.”

Activist Soha Khatib shared heartfelt words at the event, expressing hope that Wadee is at peace and still feels the love that surrounds him. The community continues to remember and honor his memory, ensuring that his legacy lives on.
