Excitement filled the frosty morning in Alexandra as dogs and their human companions gathered to participate in the McArthur Ridge Mush Up Sled Dog Race. The sound of eager dogs howling echoed through the air, setting the stage for a thrilling day of competition.
Sarah Campbell, the organizer from Main Ridge Sled Dog Club in Dunedin, was pleased to see a record number of entries this year, with around 80 participants across various classes. From rig races to scooters, bikjor, canicross, and even a veterans class for seasoned dogs, there was something for everyone at the event.
Debbie Elliman and her Siberian husky, Echo, were newcomers to the bikjor category, eager to test their skills in the race. Joining them was Christina Rock with her dog Echo, a greyhound – a rare sight in sled dog races due to their lack of endurance. Despite the challenges of heat regulation, the duo managed to navigate the course with finesse.
Daryn Chalmers, sporting a unique helmet, showcased his experience in multiple events throughout the day. His dog, Henderson James, was vocal in his anticipation for the one-dog scooter race, adding to the excitement of the competition. The picturesque Central Otago scenery only enhanced the overall experience for participants.
