Will Smith, the acclaimed creator of the Apple TV+ spy thriller “Slow Horses,” is stepping down from his role after Season 5, according to a report by Variety.
Smith, who won an Emmy for his work on the series, has been involved with “Slow Horses” since its inception in 2022. He served as the writer and executive producer, adapting Mick Herron’s “Slough House” novel series for the small screen. Despite not holding the official title of showrunner, Smith effectively led the production and guided the storytelling. This year, he is once again nominated for his writing and the drama series as a whole.
While “Slow Horses” has already been renewed for Seasons 6 and 7, Smith will be passing the reins to new showrunners. Gaby Chiappe, known for her work on the British crime drama “The Level,” will take over for Season 6, and Ben Vanstone, the creator of “All Creatures Great and Small,” will helm Season 7. After Season 5, Smith will no longer be involved in the series.
The premise of “Slow Horses” revolves around a group of disgraced MI5 agents who are assigned to mundane tasks following their past failures. Gary Oldman leads the ensemble cast as the cynical Jackson Lamb, alongside Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sophie Okonedo, Jonathan Pryce, and Hugo Weaving.
The upcoming Season 5 of “Slow Horses” is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ on Sept. 24, with the storyline following Herron’s book “London Rules.”
The series is produced by See-Saw Films for Apple TV+, with a team of executive producers that includes Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Julian Stevens, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Adam Randall, Mick Herron, Gail Mutrux, Douglas Urbanski, and Gary Oldman.
Fans of “Slow Horses” can look forward to the continuation of the thrilling spy drama, with new showrunners at the helm and exciting developments in store for the upcoming seasons.
