It seems the ‘Socialism 2025’ conference took place recently, though it might have flown under the radar for many. Unsurprisingly, a significant number of participants hailed from the far-left academic circles.

One notable proposal came from Professor David McNally, who suggested that the University of Houston should be rebranded as ‘George Floyd University,’ alongside a series of other radical ideas.

This cohort appears to reject the foundational principles of the United States. Their ambition seems to be to dismantle the current system and reconstruct it according to their vision.

FOX News reported:

Texas Professor Advocates for University of Houston to be Renamed ‘George Floyd University’

During the Socialism 2025 conference in Chicago, Professor McNally proposed renaming his institution to “George Floyd University” while also advocating for the abolition of tuition and grades. Dressed in a keffiyeh, he discussed the envisioned “de-stateification” of the University of Houston, a public university, suggesting it honor Floyd following his tragic death in May 2020.

“We would open the university up in such a way that it becomes a resource for the broader community,” McNally stated. “And with great conviction, I can say that in Houston’s Third Ward, we will be known as George Floyd University.”

McNally also shared his reflections on witnessing the George Floyd Black Lives Matter protests in June 2020, noting the overwhelming presence of protesters against the police.

“For a moment, you could see what it means when we control the streets; the police were overwhelmed and retreating. It was evident that they were outnumbered,” McNally recounted. “You start to grasp how the dynamics of social forces can shift, even in a localized scenario, altering the horizons of possibility. For that brief period, that segment of downtown Houston was no longer under their control; it was in our hands, in the hands of the insurgents.”

At Socialism 2025, Professor McNally elaborated on his radical vision for an “insurgent social movement” taking control of a university. His comments were far from abstract.

If academia is puzzled by the increasing scrutiny of federal funding, this incident vividly illustrates one of the core reasons. Many taxpayers are unwilling to finance what they perceive as anti-American ideologies with their hard-earned money.
