Sophie Kinsella, the beloved author of the Shopaholic book series, has passed away at the age of 55. Born Madeleine Sophie Wickham, she revealed her battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2022.
Her passing was confirmed through an emotional Instagram post on Wednesday, where it was expressed that despite her illness, Sophie remained grateful for her family, friends, and the success of her writing career.
Kinsella’s novels captivated audiences worldwide, selling millions of copies and being translated into numerous languages. The film adaptation of the first two Shopaholic books, titled Confessions of a Shopaholic, starred Isla Fisher and garnered widespread acclaim.
In a 2019 NPR interview, Kinsella shared that her novels centered around the experiences of young women, despite being a mother of five herself.
“I find the period of life where you’re exploring different opportunities so intriguing. You’re navigating your career, searching for love, and everything feels full of possibilities,” she explained. “The idea of an open horizon is exhilarating to me. There’s a sense of adventure in meeting a stranger at a coffee shop and wondering where that encounter might lead.”
