The commander of a US Space Force base in Greenland was relieved of her duties after sending a mass email distancing herself from statements made by Vice President JD Vance and the Trump administration following his visit last month.
Colonel Susannah Meyers was removed as commander of Pituffik Space Base due to “loss of confidence in her ability to lead,” according to a statement from the Space Operations Command.
Meyers, who took over the 821st Space Base Group in July 2024, sent an email to her troops stating that the views expressed by Vance during his visit did not reflect the base’s stance.
The Space Force emphasized the importance of commanders maintaining nonpartisanship in their duties, leading to Meyers’ removal from her position.
Meyers, a former Air Force officer who transitioned to the Space Force in 2021, oversaw around 200 Airmen and Guardians at the northernmost US military installation.
Following Vance’s visit, where he mentioned the possibility of annexing Greenland, Meyers expressed her disagreement with the administration’s views in the email sent on March 31.
Space Operations Command announced that Colonel Shawn Lee would take over as the new commanding officer of Pituffik Space Base.
Vance’s visit to Greenland and his comments about Denmark’s role in the region sparked controversy, with Danish officials criticizing the tone of his statements.
President Trump had previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, but Vance clarified that any discussions about Greenland’s future would require the consent of its residents.
