Spanish authorities announced the arrest of a German couple suspected of imprisoning their young children in a filthy home for over three years, referred to as “the house of horrors” by local media.
The children, two eight-year-old twins and a 10-year-old, were found in a state of neglect, living in squalor without access to education, as revealed by police in the Asturias region.
Following a tip-off from a concerned resident, law enforcement discovered that the number of residents in the house exceeded the registered individual, with children not enrolled in school.
A significant amount of shopping deliveries to the residence, where no one had been seen leaving since it was leased in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, raised suspicions.
“The impact of the pandemic may have influenced the family’s decision to isolate themselves for an extended period,” stated police commissioner Francisco Javier Lozano Garcia.
The couple had accumulated a significant quantity of medication, according to authorities.
Reports indicated that the children were found wearing multiple masks and nappies, with the father insisting that police wear masks before searching the premises.
“The children’s attire may hold significance or could be coincidental,” noted Lozano Garcia.
La Razon newspaper described the interior of the house as malodorous with closed blinds, and when the children finally ventured outside, they seemed fascinated by the grass, as if it were a novel experience.
After receiving medical attention, the siblings were relocated to a child care facility.
The couple was apprehended in Oviedo, and an inquiry will investigate the circumstances surrounding their relocation to Spain.
