In a recent clash of ideologies, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson faced off against ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos on the contentious issue of healthcare accessibility for undocumented immigrants. Johnson effectively countered Stephanopoulos with evidence, thus claiming victory in the debate.
It’s time to reconsider Stephanopoulos’ role; despite his appearances as a journalist, his past as a communications director for President Bill Clinton raises eyebrows. His migration to television journalism seems aimed more at narrative control than impartial reporting.
This debate was emblematic of the bias that often pervades interactions between political figures and journalists.
Here’s a glimpse into their exchange, courtesy of Real Clear Politics:
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Let’s clarify the facts. The proposal in question does not allocate healthcare for illegal immigrants, who are ineligible for coverage under the Affordable Care Act and cannot receive subsidies. They remain excluded from Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The Democratic bill does not alter this status.
MIKE JOHNSON: Actually, that’s not accurate. This proposal unwinds crucial changes set forth in the legislation known as the Big Beautiful Bill, passed on July 4th. That legislation has successfully ensured medication for eligible populations. A recent nonpartisan review by the Congressional Budget Office confirmed that our provisions have led to lower premiums.
Why is that? We disallowed ineligible recipients, including unlawful entrants, from benefitting from Medicaid, which is meant solely for specific U.S. citizens—vulnerable pregnant women, the disabled, and the elderly. By safeguarding these resources, we minimized fraud and abuse within the program. The counter-proposals we are facing would undo these accomplishments. It’s a straightforward reality.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: The CBO did not explicitly mention illegal immigrants in that context. You’ve made your point there.

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos admonishes Speaker Mike Johnson with his claim of “here are the facts,” asserting that illegal aliens have yet to benefit from government healthcare. However, after Johnson articulates his stance, Stephanopoulos’s retort of “you’ve made your point there” was notably underwhelming.

This incident showcases a recurring theme: the Democratic narrative falters, only to be bolstered by media figures like Stephanopoulos, perpetuating a cycle of misinformation. Observers can’t help but notice this pattern—an ongoing performance where the vast majority of media actors seem bound to the same script.
