Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game” has captivated audiences worldwide with its intense storyline and complex characters. Now, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is shedding light on the real-life inspirations behind the show’s villains.
In a recent interview with Time, Hwang revealed that he couldn’t help but draw parallels between the show’s VIPs and Tesla founder Elon Musk. Describing Musk as a prominent figure in today’s society, Hwang noted that the tech mogul’s showmanship and influence bear resemblance to some of the VIP characters in the series.
While the VIPs in the first two seasons of “Squid Game” were mere spectators, Season 3 takes a darker turn as they actively participate in the deadly games. According to Hwang, the decision to have the VIPs unmask themselves and join the games was influenced by the current political landscape in the United States.
Hwang explained, “In the past, those in power operated behind closed doors, hidden from public view. However, in today’s society, particularly in America, the elite are more open about their influence and control. The big tech owners and other powerful individuals no longer hide behind a curtain; instead, they proudly display their authority, declaring themselves as the ones in charge.”
This shift in dynamics reflects the ongoing conversations about oligarchy and the concentration of power in the hands of a few individuals. By portraying the VIPs as active participants in the deadly games, “Squid Game” challenges viewers to confront the reality of power dynamics in our own society.
As “Squid Game” continues to make waves in the entertainment industry, Hwang’s insights into the show’s themes and characters offer a deeper understanding of the complex narrative. With its thought-provoking storyline and compelling characters, “Squid Game” has cemented its place as a cultural phenomenon that sparks important conversations about power, control, and the human experience.
