St. John: Reviving 1960s Glamour in Modern Fashion

With its recent resurgence in popularity, the 62-year-old brand St. John is making a splash in the fashion world once again. The brand’s new flagship store on Madison Avenue and increased interest in its suits on luxury resale websites like The Realreal are just a few indicators of its current success. Additionally, the Amazon Prime show Palm Royale has brought 1960s socialite style, reminiscent of St. John’s glamorous fashion, back into the spotlight.

Capitalizing on this moment, St. John is reintroducing its classic designs. Enrico Chiarparin, the executive vice president of design, has been meticulously updating some of the brand’s original designs from the ’60s. This season, he unveiled pastel crochet knit dresses and shorts with modernized silhouettes and updated fabrics, complete with the original label from the brand’s founding year of 1962 sewn into the collars.

Chiarparin drew inspiration for his own creations from the sunny and arid landscapes of Palm Springs, incorporating kiwi green and pink tweeds that exude a Slim Aarons photograph aesthetic. Block floral prints inspired by cactus flowers adorned skirts and dresses, while a nod to Americana was present in a red, white, and blue tweed set. The collection also featured structured pieces alongside loose and flowy lace slip dresses and silk tops, evoking a bohemian, hippy chic vibe.

St. John’s expertise in knits was showcased in several cacti-colored pieces, while a simple 1990s-style white tank dress provided a more understated option. However, the brand’s signature colorful ’60s aesthetic remained at the forefront of the collection.

Overall, St. John’s revival of 1960s glamour with a modern twist is a testament to the brand’s timeless appeal and ability to adapt to contemporary fashion trends. With a nod to its heritage and a fresh perspective on classic designs, St. John continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts and cement its status as a iconic luxury brand.
