The recent tensions between the United States and Iran have put the UK on high alert, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his cabinet discussing potential US attacks on Iran and the implications for British assets in the Middle East. Just a day after downplaying the possibility of US involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran, the UK government is now actively considering its response to a potential escalation.

One key point of discussion is the use of the US-UK air base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean as a launchpad for American air strikes on Iran. This move would bring Britain closer to the conflict and raise questions about the need for UK approval for such actions. While the UK has so far stayed out of the Israel-Iran conflict, it is clear that the situation is volatile and could escalate quickly.

The possibility of a US attack on Iran has led to concerns about the legality of British involvement in such military actions. Attorney-General Lord Richard Hermer has reportedly warned that UK forces should only engage in defensive action and not participate in offensive strikes without proper legal justification. However, the UK government maintains that it has the right to self-defence if its assets are threatened.

Despite his support for Israel’s right to defend itself and opposition to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Sir Keir Starmer has stopped short of endorsing US intervention in the conflict. He continues to call for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to the crisis, emphasizing the need for caution and careful consideration before taking any military action.

The potential use of B2 stealth bombers to target Iran’s nuclear facilities, particularly the Fordow site, raises logistical challenges for the US military. While Diego Garcia provides a strategic location for launching such attacks, the UK government remains cautious about getting directly involved in offensive operations.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the UK has taken precautionary measures to protect British nationals in Israel and the surrounding areas. Family members of embassy and consulate staff have been temporarily withdrawn, and advice has been issued for UK citizens to register with diplomatic missions and follow local authorities’ guidance.

In light of the ongoing crisis, the UK government is closely monitoring the situation and remains prepared to respond to any threats to British assets in the region. While the prospect of US military action against Iran looms large, the UK’s stance on the conflict remains cautious and focused on diplomatic solutions.
