Apple has recently unveiled a groundbreaking smartwatch feature designed to assist in the identification of hypertension, a chronic condition affecting a substantial population globally.

Over the past several years, Apple has been diligently enhancing its smartwatch repertoire to include functionalities that alert users to severe health issues. It initiated this trend in 2018 with a feature that detects potential atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm impacting approximately six million Americans—predominantly older adults who are less inclined to adopt Apple Watch technology. In 2024, the company expanded further into health monitoring with a feature for detecting sleep apnea, a condition that affects around 30 million adults in the U.S.

The latest hypertension detection feature targets a considerably larger public health issue: roughly 50% of American adults, equating to 120 million individuals, live with high blood pressure, classified as 130/80 mmHg or higher. Alarmingly, many remain unaware of their condition until it precipitates severe health problems such as cardiovascular diseases or kidney failure. Emerging research also indicates a potential correlation between hypertension and cognitive decline. In its first year, Apple anticipates notifying over one million individuals who have yet to be diagnosed with hypertension.
