Federal Authorities Target Miami Organ Donation Agency Amid Safety and Performance Concerns

WASHINGTON — In a decisive move, the Trump administration announced on Thursday plans to dismantle a Miami-based organ donation organization, deeming it “failed” due to a range of critical issues, including underperformance, safety violations, and numerous documentation errors.
The Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency stands as one of 55 nonprofit organ procurement organizations (OPOs) spread across the United States, tasked with facilitating the recovery of organs from deceased donors and coordinating matches with patients on the national transplant waiting list.
The administration’s decision follows a troubling investigation which revealed a 2024 incident in which administrative errors led a surgeon to inexplicably reject a heart that was intended for a patient in dire need of surgery.
