The U.S. State Department has recently issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the Turks and Caicos Islands, warning travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime. The alert comes as the islands gear up for spring break visitors.

Most of the crime in this British Overseas Territory occurs on the main island of Providenciales, with the local police having limited investigatory resources, according to the State Department. In a tragic incident in January, an Illinois sheriff’s deputy, Shamone Duncan, 50, was killed in a shooting while celebrating her sister’s birthday in Turks and Caicos.

When visiting the islands, the State Department advises against walking alone at night, not answering the door unless expecting a guest, and not resisting during robbery attempts. It is also recommended to have a contingency plan for emergencies and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for alerts and easier location by authorities during emergencies.

Travelers should also be cautious about their luggage before leaving the U.S. to ensure that it does not contain any bullets or firearms, as they are illegal in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The police strictly enforce these laws, even at the airport during departure, with travelers facing arrest, jail time, and heavy fines for violations.

In some cases, U.S. citizens have been detained for weeks or more after being found with bullets in their luggage. Offenders could face 12 or more years in prison, with no guarantee of release, as the law allows for some exceptions and discretion.

In 2024, multiple Americans were arrested in the country for unknowingly carrying ammunition or bullets in their luggage while returning to the U.S. Two fathers, Ryan Watson and Tyler Wenrich, were among those detained after security found bullets in their bags upon their return from vacation.

For consular services and assistance to victims of crime, the U.S. Embassy in Nassau, Bahamas, provides support for U.S. citizens in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is essential for travelers to be aware of the laws and regulations in the destination country to avoid any legal complications and ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
