Steamy weekend sees 26 shot, 3 fatally across Chicago

Steamy weekend sees 26 shot, 3 fatally across Chicago

Chicago experienced a relatively calm weekend in terms of gun violence despite the scorching heat, with only three people killed and 23 others injured in shootings across the city. This marks the lowest shooting toll for the same weekend since 2018, according to data from the crime tracking site HeyJackass.com.

Over the weekend, the Chicago Police Department responded to a total of 20 shooting incidents involving victims ranging in age from 11 to 63. As of now, no charges have been announced in connection with any of the shootings.

Here is a breakdown of the incidents that occurred over the weekend:

Friday, June 20

Saturday, June 21

– 2:03 a.m., 3900 block of W. Washington Blvd.: A 21-year-old woman was shot in the chest and grazed in the stomach after trying to grab a gun from a female offender during an argument.
– 2:30 a.m., 6200 block of S. King Dr.: A 34-year-old man was shot twice in the left foot while on the sidewalk.
– 2:30 a.m., 2300 block of W. Roosevelt Rd.: Three victims were shot by three armed males who fled the scene.
– 3:04 a.m., 3600 block of W. Fifth Ave.: Two men, aged 25 and 21, were shot at the entrance of a housing complex.
– 5:24 a.m., 100 block of E. 93rd St.: A 29-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
– 7:15 a.m., 3600 block of W. Fifth Ave.: Two men, aged 21 and 26, were shot multiple times.
– 4:10 p.m., 5600 block of S. Western Ave.: A 33-year-old man was shot in the right leg.
– 5:28 p.m., 1400 block of S. Tripp Ave.: An 11-year-old boy was shot in the lower back.
– 9:09 p.m., 9700 block of S. Commercial Ave.: A 35-year-old man was shot in the back.
– 10:47 p.m., 12000 block of S. Harvard Ave.: A 26-year-old man was shot in the leg.
– 11:33 p.m., 8000 block of S. Ingleside Ave.: Two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, were shot in the leg.

Sunday, June 22

– 1:15 a.m., 4900 block of W. Gunnison St.: A 25-year-old man was shot in the finger.
– 4:09 a.m., 1300 block of S. Kolin Ave.: A 63-year-old man was shot in the head.
– 4:10 a.m., 5400 block of S. Throop St.: A 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg.
– 4:40 a.m., 400 block of N. Hamlin Ave.: A 39-year-old woman was found with a gunshot wound to the arm.
– 5:25 a.m., 5100 block of W. Thomas St.: An 18-year-old man was shot in the chest.
– 8:34 a.m., 4400 block of W. Monroe St.: A 32-year-old man was shot in the leg.

Monday, June 23

– 2:20 a.m., 8400 block of S. Muskegon Ave.: A 28-year-old man was hit in the right thigh.

In addition to the shootings, the police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the death of a woman found in Lake Michigan near Navy Pier on Saturday evening.

It is important to note that HeyJackass.com defines the “weekend” as spanning from noon Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

This weekend’s relatively low shooting toll is a positive development for Chicago, but it is crucial for law enforcement and community leaders to continue working together to address the underlying issues that contribute to gun violence in the city.
