The Shaheen political legacy continues to thrive in New Hampshire.
Stefany Shaheen, daughter of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s 1st District on Tuesday. She successfully defeated Maura Sullivan and several other contenders, despite criticisms that she was relying on her family’s established political name.
This seat became available following Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas’s decision to pursue a Senate run. The general election for this district is expected to be competitive, as former Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly won the area by two points in 2024.
Throughout her campaign, Shaheen sought to distinguish herself from her mother, criticizing the agreement her mother helped negotiate to end the previous fall’s government shutdown. She instead focused on her own public service efforts in Portsmouth and her advocacy for medical research.
Nevertheless, her recognizable family name provided her with an early advantage in polling and financial backing.
According to a POLITICO analysis, approximately $740,000 of Shaheen’s campaign funds came from donors who had previously supported her mother. This accounted for 39 percent of the total itemized campaign donations. One donor shared that the senator personally reached out last fall to seek their support for her daughter.
Sullivan, Shaheen’s primary opponent, tried to leverage the latter’s family connections against her, particularly in a year when the Democratic base has consistently rejected candidates perceived to be tied to the establishment.
The primary became increasingly contentious in its final weeks, with Shaheen and Sullivan clashing over campaign finances and launching attack ads amid tightening polls. The race saw a quick reduction in candidates towards the end, with two dropping out. Among them, progressive Christian Urrutia, endorsed Shaheen.
