Stephen Curry, the basketball champion, is joining forces with Comcast to bring to life the inspiring true story of a determined cheer team that defied all odds and made history. This exclusive project, titled “Spirit,” is a four-part series produced by Curry’s multimedia company, Unanimous Media, in collaboration with The WorkShop Content Studios and FreshFly. Directed by Philadelphia native Matt Howley, the series follows the journey of a cheer squad from George Washington High School in Philadelphia, who became the first team from the city’s school district to reach the NCA High School Nationals.
In a joint statement, Curry and executive producer Erick Peyton expressed their excitement for the series, calling it a coming-of-age story that showcases how competitive cheerleading can transform individuals, teams, and schools. They emphasized that “Spirit” is the ultimate underdog tale, highlighting the team’s resilience and determination to prove doubters wrong.
This project marks Curry’s continued foray into the entertainment industry, following the success of his previous projects such as the documentary “Stephen Curry: Underrated” and his scripted television role in “Mr. Throwback.” Additionally, Curry co-produced “Sentenced,” a documentary on childhood illiteracy for Peacock.
“Spirit” is set to premiere exclusively on Comcast’s Black Experience on Xfinity on February 27. The official trailer for the series has already been released, offering a glimpse into the inspiring journey of the cheer team as they strive for greatness.
