An Instagram post from ETalkCTV captures a moment where the two came close ― separated by just one person ― yet managed to avoid direct interaction.

It’s uncertain if either noticed the other, but this may have been for the best since Spielberg had recently commented critically on Chalamet’s controversial views regarding the popularity of ballet and opera today.

Spielberg further expressed his views during a panel at SXSW, focusing on the significance of movie theaters.

He mentioned that while he appreciates working with Netflix, the true cinematic experience occurs “when we can influence a community to congregate in a strange, dark space where all of us are strangers.”

Spielberg elaborated, “At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with. And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts. And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way.”

Amid audience applause, Spielberg emphasized, “we want that [experience] to be sustained. We want that to go forever.”

JS has contacted both Spielberg and Chalamet for comment. However, it seems neither chose to speak with the other at the Oscars on Sunday, as the video below illustrates.
