A $95,000 Llew Summers Sculpture Stolen and Sold for Scrap
Parts of the 2.2 tonne and 2.2m long bronze sculpture ‘Flight’ by Llew Summers, stolen from outside the Mt Pleasant Community Centre, were found at a scrap metal yard. The yard contacted the police after realizing the connection to the stolen artwork. Police are actively investigating the case.
Mt Pleasant Residents’ Association chair, Derek McCullough, believes the parts found at the scrap metal yard are from the stolen sculpture, although police have not confirmed this.
‘Flight’ was a significant piece purchased to honor Summers and his final work before his passing. The community raised $95,000 for the sculpture, which held sentimental value to the residents.
McCullough expressed devastation over the theft and mentioned the outpouring of support from the community. The committee is now exploring options to replace the sculpture, including potentially recreating it with a 3D printer.
Despite the challenges of cost and feasibility, the association is determined to preserve the memory of Llew Summers through his artwork.
