Stripe Introduces New Feature to Help AI Startups Manage Model Usage Costs

On Monday, Stripe released a preview of a new feature that could potentially revolutionize how AI startups and other companies handle the costs associated with AI model usage. This feature aims to streamline the process of passing through the underlying costs of AI model usage to customers while also allowing startups to add a markup percentage on token usage.

This innovative feature by Stripe enables companies to automatically charge a percentage above the cost of tokens, providing them with a consistent profit margin. For example, a startup can set a 30% markup on top of the token costs paid to the model maker.

According to Stripe, the billing feature simplifies the process for AI startups by allowing them to select the AI models they wish to use, track the API prices of those models, monitor customers’ token usage, and apply the profit-margin markup automatically.

AI startups typically employ various pricing strategies, such as tiered monthly subscriptions with usage-rate caps. Failure to set usage limits can result in customers exceeding their allocated usage and incurring additional charges, potentially putting the startup in a financial bind. This dilemma is particularly challenging for agentic startups whose customers heavily rely on their agents, leading to increased token consumption from model providers like OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic, and others.

Stripe has also unveiled its AI gateway, allowing users to access multiple models and choose the most suitable one for their needs. Additionally, the billing tool is compatible with popular third-party gateways like those offered by Vercel and OpenRouter, as mentioned in a tweet by a Stripe product manager.

While Stripe is currently not imposing a markup on the gateway, other startups like OpenRouter provide AI model cost management features with a flat markup percentage over token fees. OpenRouter offers budget controls and access to over 300 models in their first-tier plan.

Although the billing feature from Stripe is still in waitlist mode and not yet charging a markup on the gateway, its potential to simplify tracking and billing for AI model expenses could significantly benefit startups. As of now, Stripe has not provided a timeline for the general availability of this feature.
