A recent incident at Columbia University has sparked outrage as a group of pro-Hamas student protesters disrupted a Jewish history class by barging in with their faces covered in keffiyehs. This incident is just one example of the increasing trend of progressive students taking up the cause of protesting Israel, often crossing the line into antisemitism.
The protesters, who were filmed by themselves, entered the class on “History of Modern Israel” and distributed pro-Hamas flyers that depicted the Star of David being destroyed. The students, most of whom were Jewish, were reportedly harassed during the incident. Columbia student Elisha Baker shared a video of the disruption on X, calling out the lack of academic freedom at the university in 2025.
In the video, Israeli professor Avi Shilon can be seen confronting the protesters and asking them to leave, citing the disruption as a violation of civil rights. The flyers distributed by the protesters contained messages such as “The enemy will not see tomorrow,” “Burn Zionism to the ground,” and “Crush Zionism,” with one flyer showing an Israeli flag on fire.
The incident has raised concerns about the tolerance of such behavior at American schools, particularly within the Ivy League. The protesters’ actions have not only disrupted the learning environment but have also tarnished the university’s reputation. It is essential for academic institutions to address and condemn such actions to ensure a safe and inclusive campus environment for all students.
