A group of boys at Otago Boys’ High School in Dunedin decided to shave their heads for a cause, never expecting to lead the country in fundraising efforts.

The school raised over $21,000 for Shave for a Cure, surpassing their initial target of $10,000. The fundraising was organized by service prefect Flynn MacGill-Brown, 17, who was pleasantly surprised by the success of the event.

Despite the pouring rain, 45 boys got their heads shaved in the school’s open-air theatre. Flynn expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from his peers and the community, saying, “It’s a pretty amazing achievement. I didn’t think it would get anywhere near this big at all.”

For Flynn, the cause hits close to home as he has family members affected by cancer. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness and support for those battling blood cancer and leukaemia.

The boys may now sport minimal hair for the next few months, but they understand that it is a small sacrifice compared to what cancer patients endure. Their efforts have not only raised funds but also brought the school community together for a meaningful cause.
