Chicago police arrested 19-year-old Emir Esenbekov after he allegedly robbed two Subway restaurants in Norwood Park on the Northwest Side within 40 minutes. Esenbekov now faces two counts of aggravated robbery in connection with the incidents that occurred early on June 9.
The first robbery took place at the Subway located at 5232 North Nagle around 1:40 a.m. Esenbekov reportedly handed the clerk a demand note before fleeing with cash. Just 40 minutes later, he struck again at the Subway at 6352 North Milwaukee.
Authorities had already been alerted to the first robbery and had staked out the Milwaukee Avenue location. They spotted Esenbekov, who matched the suspect’s description, entering and exiting the restaurant. As officers approached him, a store employee informed them that he had just robbed the establishment.
Upon seeing the police, Esenbekov made an “excited utterance,” confessing, “I robbed Subway.” During the arrest, authorities found a water pistol in his hoodie pocket, along with $155 in cash and a note stating, “I have a gun. This is a robbery.”
Following his arrest, Judge Shauna Boliker ordered Esenbekov to be detained, emphasizing that he “terrorizes unassuming store clerks with a water gun and a note.”
