After binging the first season of Such Brave Girls in just a few days, I eagerly dove into Season 2 when it dropped in July. The show continues with the same level of viciousness and vulgarity that made it so captivating in the first season. However, beneath the surface, there is more complexity and nuance to the characters than initially meets the eye.
The dysfunctional family members are back to their usual antics in Season 2. Josie finds herself kidnapped by her mother and forced into a surprise wedding with her deadbeat boyfriend Seb. Desperate to escape this situation, she attempts to get herself institutionalized. Meanwhile, Billie embarks on a tumultuous “sugar baby” relationship with the much-older Graham, and Deb struggles to regain Dev’s favor after he discovers her lie about her ex-husband’s death. Throughout it all, the characters continue to justify their questionable behavior with self-help buzzwords and weaponized therapy speak.
Despite the characters’ flaws and destructive tendencies, Such Brave Girls isn’t as misanthropic as it may seem. Josie, in particular, garners sympathy as she strives to pursue her creative passions and explore her sexuality while still being the family’s punching bag. Billie’s constant search for validation from indifferent men is a poignant reflection of her upbringing, with her mother perpetually putting her own needs above her daughters’. Even Deb, grappling with class anxiety in a society that stigmatizes poor single mothers, evokes a sense of empathy.
The show delves into themes of family dynamics, individual agency, and societal expectations with a darkly comedic lens. Each character’s journey is fraught with struggles and setbacks, but there are moments of vulnerability and growth that make them relatable and compelling.
As Season 2 unfolds, viewers are taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, from laughter to heartbreak. The intricate web of relationships and the characters’ inner turmoil make for a captivating and thought-provoking viewing experience.
With its sharp wit, biting humor, and emotionally charged moments, Such Brave Girls continues to push boundaries and challenge viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature. It’s a show that doesn’t shy away from the messiness of life, but rather embraces it in all its complexity.
